The exhibition Stadtansichten. Architectural Photography of the 19th Century provides an insight into the Photographic Collection of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. The presentation is the result of a review of the holdings, which was carried out in the winter semester 2024/25 as part of the photography seminar in the Göttingen Art Collection at the Department of Art History.
The high-quality architectural photographs were selected from the collection of 19th century photographs, which, with the exception of non-European photography, had long been ignored. In addition to a large number of photographs by well-known photographers such as Carlo Naya (1816-1882) or Jean Pascal Sébah (1872-1947), the show also includes lesser-known figures such as Georg Röbcke (1863-1941), who marks the transition to the 20th century.
Due to the long exposure times required by technology, architecture became a common motif with the invention of photography in the 1840s. The exhibition shows early portraits of Paris, Berlin and Moscow, among other places. However, it also provides an insight into the intentions, marketing and technical development of the still young medium.
