When the magic of the movie merges with the magic of the night sky, Duisburg cineastes know it's time for the Stadtwerke Sommerkino. Under the direction of Stefanos Tsialis, the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra is once again taking part in the cult open-air event this season. On the screen: Charlie Chaplin's last great silent film masterpiece "Modern Times". On the music stands: the poignant music that the leading actor, director, screenwriter and producer Chaplin composed for this classic of film history, which premiered in 1936 - with the help of accomplished Hollywood musicians, by the way, because he couldn't read or even write down music. From the noisy sound of the machine age to echoes of Giacomo Puccini's music, Charlie Chaplin, seen here for the last time as the Tramp with a beard, stick and hat, uses a diverse palette of moods for the catchy soundtrack. The wistful final melody in particular is not only well known to enthusiastic moviegoers, as it still has a musical life of its own today with a later version of the lyrics under the title "Smile".
