Transylvania in the 15th century.
The voivode Vlad III, of the Order of the Dragon Dracul, known as "The Impaler", rules his kingdom with ruthless cruelty. In 1458, although hopelessly outnumbered, he defeats an invading Turkish army and has over 10,000 of his enemies staked as a deterrent. When, in revenge, the Turks inform his bride Elisabetha that her husband has been killed in the battle, she commits suicide by jumping from the castle battlements. Vlad, senseless with grief, curses God and from then on walks the remote Carpathian Mountains as "Nosferatu" - the undead.
"I am Dracula. And I welcome you."
When Jonathan Harker, a young English lawyer, sets off on a journey to the remote land of Transylvania in 1875 to help a nobleman called Count Dracula with a property transaction in England, he unwittingly opens the door to an ancient, terrible secret. His journey, begun with a sense of adventure, quickly turns to pure horror as he begins to uncover the terrible truth about his host and the true nature of the castle: it is a prison from which he cannot escape. But when Dracula reveals to him his plan to go to England to bring his darkness upon a new land full of unsuspecting victims, Harker realizes that he must escape not only for his own life, but also to prevent the horror from spreading to his homeland. While his fiancée Mina impatiently and anxiously awaits Jonathan's return to England, Jonathan makes one last, desperate attempt to escape from the gloomy castle. Weeks later, a ghost ship drifts off the coast of England and horrific events begin to unfold in the seaside town of Whitby. When the team of vampire hunters, consisting of Dr. Van Helsing, Jonathan Harker, Mina Murray, Dr. John Seward and Arthur Holmwood, join forces and begin their hunt for the Blood Count, the hunters soon become the hunted themselves...
The Irish writer Bram Stoker tells his story, published in 1897, using diary entries, correspondence, telegrams and newspaper reports.
