Stop! Your art is forbidden.

World premiere - Theater project for all on art in the Nazi state

Saturday March 8, 2025

Start: 19:00

  • Stage

Theater premiere as part of the Week of Remembrance Hamburg-Nord. At the beginning of the 1930s, there are signs: After the wild and creative heyday of modern art, especially in Germany, everything changes when the NSDAP comes to power. But that is what happened. Those in power quickly established their idea of art and began to weed out anything that did not fit in with their Nordic ideal. Artists were banned from their professions, dismissed, books were burned and so-called "degenerate art" was listed on the index. Deprived of their creative work, those affected try not to perish in internal exile and somehow survive if they have not left their homeland. And those with a Jewish connection must manage to flee in time.

"Stop! Your art is forbidden" is a theater project that delves into this difficult and destructive era. We investigate and ask questions, delve into the fate of Bauhaus artist Oskar Schlemmer. And what about artists with disabilities? That doesn't fit into the Nazi era either. And we look around us in the present day when the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt, on the occasion of the preparations for the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus in Dessau in 2025, shouts that this is an "aberration of modernism". It would be better to award a "Caspar David Prize" to promote "specifically German painting".

Staged by director Jörn Waßmund.

In simplified language:

There is a theater premiere.
The premiere is during the commemoration week in Hamburg-Nord.
Something important happens in the 1930s.
During this time, art in Germany changes a lot.
The NSDAP party comes to power.
The people from the NSDAP then decide what is art and what is not.
They only like a certain kind of art.
They like the art they call "Nordic".
They ban other art.
They burn books and sort out art they don't like.
They call that "degenerate art".
Many artists are no longer allowed to work.
Other artists are dismissed.
Some artists had to leave Germany.
If they stay, they have to live in hiding.
That is very difficult for them.
It is particularly difficult for artists who are Jewish.
They have to leave Germany quickly in order to survive.

There is a play about this.
The play is called: "Stop! Your art is forbidden".
The play is about this difficult time.
We ask questions and look at the fates of artists.
For example, the artist Oskar Schlemmer.
He was an artist who worked at the Bauhaus.
We also ask: what about artists who have a disability?
They don't fit into the idea of art in the Nazi era either.
We also look at the present day.
For example, when the AfD party in Saxony-Anhalt says something.
They say that the Bauhaus is an "aberration of modernism".
They would rather award a prize for "specifically German painting".

The play was directed by Jörn Waßmund.
In other words, he brought the play to the stage.
