The debate format Streit & Zuversicht by ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS, Heimathafen Neukölln and Holtzbrinck Berlin is entering the next round. This time we're looking at the question: "Creating peace without weapons" ... gone forever? Let's debate!

At a time when geopolitical tensions, wars and military conflicts dominate world events and the news, we are discussing the pressing question: How do we take a clear stance on issues such as armament and Bundeswehr deployments?

"Creating peace without weapons" has long been a shining ideal in the hope of a world in which conflicts can be resolved purely through dialog and diplomacy. But in view of current global threats, such as the Russian war of aggression, this ideal seems almost unattainable. The event sheds light on the inner conflict that many of us feel. Do we have to say goodbye to the idea of a weapons-free peace for good?

On stage

Anton Hofreiter, Member of the German Bundestag, Alliance 90/The Greens. From 2013 to 2021, Hofreiter was chairman of the Green parliamentary group in the Bundestag. Since December 2021, he has been Chairman of the Committee on European Union Affairs in the German Bundestag.

André Hassan Khan, professional soldier. Hassan Khan served as a professional soldier in a total of 27 missions in Afghanistan and Mali and will underpin the debate with personal experiences. In March 2024, his book "Heute fühlt sich alles an wie Krieg" was published by Rowohlt Verlag, in which the former soldier autobiographically deals with his experiences and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Anastasia Tikhomirova, journalist. Tikhomirova is one of the most promising journalists of her generation. She has already worked for taz, Tagesspiegel and ZEIT, among others. With her Master's degree in Eastern European Studies and interdisciplinary anti-Semitism research, she brings a wide range of perspectives on current conflicts.

Streit & Zuversicht invites you to be part of this exciting debate. Two opposing opinions meet here, presented and argued by debaters from the Berlin Debating Union. They will be supported by experts who are confronted with the consequences of security crises on a daily basis, as well as by academics from the fields of philosophy, sociology and law, who will help us to contextualize our moral and social responsibility in current events.
