Sun Ra was a jazz composer, bandleader, piano and synthesizer player, poet and philosopher who is known for his "cosmic philosophy", his musical compositions and his performances. Alongside artists such as Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane and Albert Ayler, he was one of the most important figures of avant-garde jazz in the 1960s. "Of all the jazz musicians, Sun Ra was probably the most controversial," according to critic Scott Yanow, which can be attributed to Sun Ra's eclectic music and unorthodox lifestyle. Sun Ra claimed that he belonged to the "angelic race" and was not from Earth, but from Saturn. He developed a complex personality with "cosmic" philosophies and lyrical poetry that made him a pioneer of Afrofuturism, as he preached consciousness and peace above all. He gave up his birth name and took on the name and role of Sun Ra (Ra is the ancient Egyptian god of the sun).
