(Photo)collages are associated with actions such as cutting up, covering up, pretending. They demonstrate the fragility of things. For Max Ernst, collage was the elementary artistic production process. He described it as a meeting of different realities on an apparently unsuitable plane plus a "spark of poetry". While his early photo collages were created in the early 1920s at a time when the process still had the potential to be provocative, today we are surrounded by composite worlds. Can collage still irritate? What influence do technological innovations have on the process of photo collage in art? Why do artists use collage today? What are their themes?
