SYMBIOSIS

Two circus artists, two styles, one performance experience. SYMBIOSIS is a contemporary circus diptych that combines circus, magic nouvelle and object theater.

In this project, Kolja Huneck and Luuk Brantjes search for a performative concept in which two artistic interpretations merge into a circus diptych. SYMBIOSIS delves deep into the tension and balance between humanity and its natural environment. The artists - each on their own - embark on their own paths within a surreal universe, exploring how humans relate to the ephemeral world around them.
Using objects made from oil, Kolja Huneck creates a world in which vinyl records not only play music, but become part of complex juggling patterns. The fragility of the records meets the roughness of the asphalt - in absurd and humorous moments. While Kolja Huneck manipulates the materials, Luuk Brantjes finds himself in the role in which the material influences him. Through acrobatics, he explores the dialog between body and material, questions gravity, plays with risks and discovers dependencies on his material partners. Using a specially developed apparatus, Luuk Brantjes dives headfirst into all corners of the dome tent, constantly moving between balance and imbalance.
In SYMBIOSIS, juggling and acrobatics merge into a surprising choreographic dialog between artists, objects, material and space. The specially constructed dome tent becomes a stage space in which these elements interweave and invite the audience into an immersive world. The project is an international collaboration with partners in Germany, the Netherlands, France and Belgium. Kolja Huneck is a circus author and performer from Munich and graduated from Codarts Circus Arts in Rotterdam in 2019. During his studies there, he met Luuk Brantjes, a circus artist from Rotterdam who graduated from the SKH/DOCH School of Dance and Circus in Stockholm in 2020.
