SYREN Modern Dance and Bach Society Houston present
"THE ART OF FUGUE"
on October 17 and 18 at St. Marienkirche Berlin
with Rick Erickson and Ben Kerswell on the organ
The renowned dance company SYREN Modern Dance from New York, in co-production with the Bach Society Houston, will celebrate the international premiere of The Art of Fugue at St. Mary's Church in Berlin on October 17 and 18, 2024. The breathtaking performance, which has been described in the USA as the "most sensual Bach experience ever", explores the concepts and definitions of beauty and the persistent human search for its existence even in dark times.
The Art of Fugue will be performed by organists Rick Erickson and Ben Kerswell. Visitors can look forward to a sensitive choreography to the eponymous composition cycle of Bach's The Art of Fugue .
Over the past ten years, the dancers of SYREN have "swept" through sacred spaces across the United States with the echoing splendor of Bach's fugues. The "Art of Fugue" has become a recognizable cornerstone of SYREN's repertoire and is now being performed in the home country of composer Johann Sebastian Bach - a long-held dream of the ensemble and organist Rick Erickson.
"There is inspiration and mystery in every note of Bach. It was a tremendous pleasure to develop a choreography for this fantastic, timeless music. The remarkable thing about the performance is that it is constantly changing! We recreate the dance for each place we visit. The dancers climb pews, dance through aisles, lean on pillars and sit next to the audience," says Kate Sutter, choreographer and co-founder of SYREN.
Lynn Peterson, also co-founder of SYREN,explains why the St. Marienkirche in Berlin was chosen : "Through SYREN's collaboration with Rick Erickson and the Bach Society of Houston, Berlin proved to be a central location for art, culture and history. When we wanted to narrow down the venues further, St. Mary's Church turned out to be just right for us. It's a place steeped in history, and the incredible acoustics make it the perfect setting for theinternational premiere of The Art Of Fugue."
