Many of Cologne's monuments are normally not or only partially accessible to the public. This changes every year on Open Monument Day. This is when many guided tours of monuments are offered, sometimes as tours, often in buildings that are normally closed to the public. A unique look behind the walls of the Kulturbunker and its history - from shelter to cultural center: The high-rise bunker on Berliner Straße was built in 1942/43 and put into operation in 1943.

It was intended to provide shelter for 2845 people, but was usually occupied by many more. After 1945, it was used as a hostel, hotel and warehouse until it was converted into a cultural bunker in 1991 by Mülheim initiatives with municipal and state support. This year, the 80th anniversary of the bombing raid on October 28, 1944 is being commemorated.
