Opening weekend "MATERIAL CULTURE BERLIN TXL 2024. A building for the future".
Fifty years ago, the architects Meinhard von Gerkan, Volkwin Marg and Klaus Nickels wrote architectural history with the former Tegel Airport.
We are celebrating this anniversary on Open Monument Day with the opening of our exhibition "MATERIAL CULTURE BERLIN TXL 2024. A building for the future" at the Berlin TXL Infocenter. It shows the highlights of the past and at the same time builds a bridge to the transformation of the airport into a place of innovation. Building and producing for the future? How does that actually work? What visions of the city do we have today in view of climate change and the energy transition? What are circular construction and bio-based materials? The exhibition features digital and analog exhibits that present interdisciplinary approaches to answering these questions.
Discover the former Tegel Airport from a new perspective!
This year, we are offering very special guided tours for the Open Monument Day: the history and future of Berlin TXL can be experienced in a vintage MAN SD double-decker bus from 1975. The tour of the former airport site provides historical insights into the iconic architecture of the listed buildings as material witnesses to the past. At the same time, they are an important starting point for the future use of the site. The historical significance of the monument in dialog with the planned subsequent use as a place of innovation is presented in detail.
