Living fossils are generally defined as organisms that have remained essentially unchanged since the beginning of time. Examples include the horseshoe crab, the ginkgo tree and, of course, Tankard. For 40 years, the Frankfurt beer-metal crew have been praising alcohol and the simple life with their mighty gospel, a highly unlikely success story that began four decades ago and culminated in a fossil of an extinct species of starfish being officially named after them: Ophiura tankardi. This is a story of close camaraderie, of eternal thirst, of four heavy metal vanguards dipping their toes into an ocean of alcohol and testing how far they can go. This is the story of Tankard.

It begins many years ago. The year is 1982 and the setting is the Goethe-Gymnasium in Frankfurt. Heavy metal is still a relatively young thing. Just a few years ago, classes were torn apart by the music. In one corner of the ring: Smokie fans. In the other: ABBA. Years later, childhood friends Andreas "Gerre" Geremia and Frank Thorwarth would coin the slogan "From Frankfurt to Frisco we destroy every disco" to make it clear which side they were on.

Even after 40 steaming, liver-destroying, gut-stretching years in the name of heavy metal, the Tankard beer train is unstoppable. Just in time for their 40th birthday celebrations, our favorite Frankfurters release "Pawlow's Dawgs", their 18th album and debut for the new label Reaper Entertainment. Produced and recorded at Gernhard Studio Troisdorf, again together with Martin Buchwalter. The taps are polished, the free beer is flowing and five long years after their last studio album, Tankard are finally back to what they do best: thrashing, drinking beer and cleverly combining metal, humor and sarcastic social criticism into one big, roaring party. Just like all those years ago in a classroom where they drank beer out of empty milk cartons. Long live Tankard. Long live the Dawgs. The world is a better place when guys like them are waiting at the bar.
