The breathtaking show "Foreshadow" by Belgian shooting star Alexander Vantournhout, which straddles the border between dance, circus and martial arts, kicks off the "Tanz! The eight extremely acrobatic dancers from his company not standing develop a utopian vision of what the dancing human body is capable of to the sounds of experimental rock music by the British band This Heat. They push the boundaries of the imaginable, explore seemingly impossible balances, support each other with their shoulders, feet and knees, challenge each other and defy gravity.
They move across the stage and a stable wall like a collective body, as if they were cogwheels in a gearbox. The choreography works like clockwork, one movement motif interlocks with the next, creating ever new landscapes of human sculptures. The aim of this choreographic feat is to explore what is still possible in the exciting and daring interactions between body and object.
The "Foreshadow" program underlines the fact that Alexander Vantournhout is currently one of the hottest and most influential choreographers in contemporary dance. His style is hard to imitate and the sparkling energy of his works has already had a major influence on the development of dance in just a few years. Vantournhout displays a firework display of virtuosity: "Not Standing" - the name of his ensemble - is the program.
Alexander Vantournhout (Brussels, 1989) studied cyr wheel and juggling at the ESAC (Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque) and contemporary dance at P.A.R.T.S. (Performing Arts Research and Training Studios) in Brussels.
Alexander Vantournhout's body language is characterized by the influences of his varied training and the respective working circumstances. However, it is characterized by two constants: his search for the creative and kinetic potential of physical limitation and the relationship or boundary between performer and object.
In 2014, he founded his dance company Not Standing in Belgium, for which he has already created twelve different choreographies.
He received the prestigious Ultima Awards for Performing Arts in 2023, an award given by the Flemish government.
Alexander Vantournhout is artist-in-residence at Kunstencentrum VIERNULVIER in Ghent and associated artist of CENTQUATRE Paris. He is a cultural ambassador for the city of Roeselare and is supported by the BNP Paribas Foundation in the development of his projects.
