taz Salon: Autoritäre Rebellion

We are not experiencing a shift to the right, we have long since moved to the right. In the taz Salon, Andreas Speit presents his book "Authoritarian Rebellion" and analyzes this dangerous development.

The public debate has changed. Opinions that were taboo a few years ago are now socially acceptable. More and more people are agreeing with racist, anti-Semitic, classist and heterosexist statements.

Has anyone in your double header ever thought out loud that the rule of law is too stolid and that someone needs to finally take action? The longing for authoritarian answers is widespread. The delegitimization of democracy doesn't just start with armed citizens of the Reich. It can be found in the so-called center of society and certainly also among readers of the taz.

Is it due to inflation, the climate crisis, the wars in the world? What role do anti-modern attitudes play in this and what does all this have to do with Björn Höcke's penchant for fairy tales and forests? In the taz Salon, we discuss where the longing for right-wing authoritarian answers comes from.

🐾 Andreas Speit is one of the leading experts on right-wing extremism. He is a journalist and author, studied social sciences and works for taz, ZEIT Online, WDR and Deutschlandfunk Kultur, among others. His column "Der rechte Rand" appears regularly in taz nord. He has received awards for his work from Medium Magazin and the German Journalists' Association. His new book "Autoritäre Rebellion" has been published by Ch. Links Verlag.

🐾 André Zuschlag moderates this salon. He was a trainee at taz nord in Hamburg from 2020 to August 2022 and has been editor and chief of staff there ever since. His main topics are politics and social issues in Hamburg and northern Germany.
