Bands form out of the chaos of youth, find each other, lose each other and finally reinvent themselves. The Backseat Lovers are a prime example of this. Their music, sometimes rousing, sometimes melancholic, has captivated a growing fan base since 2019. But after their meteoric rise, the band from Utah went quiet. Now, three years later, they have made an impressive comeback.
It all began in 2017 in Provo, Utah, when singer and guitarist Joshua Harmon and guitarist Jonas Swanson met by chance at an open mic. A year later, they formed The Backseat Lovers together with drummer Juice Welch and bassist Ethan Christensen (later replaced by KJ Ward). Winning a local "Battle of the Bands" competition quickly made it clear that there was more than just youthful exuberance at work here.
Their debut album "When We Were Friends" (2019) catapulted them onto the alternative rock scene. 'Kilby Girl' in particular - a nostalgically charged song about youthful insecurities and a thirst for adventure - brought them radio airplay and a loyal fan base. Their reputation grew and festival appearances followed, including at Lollapalooza in 2021. But then the band unexpectedly hit the brakes.
Their second album, "Waiting to Spill", was released in 2022 under a major label, but instead of seizing the moment, the band withdrew. A period of self-reflection began. "For the last year and a half, we've been a million miles away from the stage," frontman Joshua Harmon describes poetically. "We've been leaning against walls of sound and lying under trees of leaves."
Now they are back on their feet. With renewed energy and the experience of a long retreat, The Backseat Lovers are embarking on a major UK and European tour. Germany can also look forward to it: Fans will have the opportunity to see the band live in Berlin and Cologne.
"Not everything is prepared. Not everything is put together. But there's something moving down the hall and we just have to get up and see what it is," says Harmon about returning to the stage. Perhaps it is precisely this imperfection that makes their music so unique. Their journey continues - and this time they are ready to share it with the world.
