Three goddesses, a golden apple and a momentous verdict: in The Judgement of Paris, the shepherd Paris is at the center of a divine contest. Hera, Athena and Aphrodite ensnare him with promises of power, fame and love. His choice sets in motion a chain of events that lead to the outbreak of the Trojan War. Thomas Arne's baroque opera also reflects precisely these rival demands: He set a libretto to music that had previously served as the basis of a composers' contest in London. In Bettina Bruinier's production, the goddesses look at themselves and reconstruct their stories from the present.
