Student Aoyama Sōsuke has lost his parents in an accident and suffers greatly from the loss. At an exhibition, he meets the ink painter Shinoda Kozan, who invites him to become his student. With empathy, the master introduces the young man to the art of ink painting sumi-e (suibokuga) ...

The film gives an insight into the art form of "Sumi-e" and the relationship between master and pupil, as is often found in traditional art disciplines in Japan.
