THE LOST SENSE EXPERIENCE

In the organizer's words:

How do we perceive the world when we lose our sense of smell? The exhibition invites visitors on an immersive journey through the beauty and fragility of life - told through innovative technologies from art and medicine.

Through emotional storytelling and collaboration with international artists, The Lost Sense Experience brings to life a topic that is difficult to convey as part of a sophisticated overall production. Participants include Domestic Data Streamers (Barcelona), Mosche Sound Design, Sunst Studios, Studio De Pasquale (Studio Lilo), photographer Volker Conradus and the directing duo Hometown (Berlin).

Visitors to the exhibition can also start a scientifically based olfactory training course - with a free fragrance kit, which can also be ordered online.

The background to the exhibition, which was initiated by ZURICH Versicherung, is highly relevant to many people: According to scientists, over four million people in Germany have suffered from anosmia - a partial or complete loss of olfactory perception - as a result of Covid-19. Even though the majority of those affected have regained their sense of smell, up to 500,000 people still suffer from the consequences today: Everyday moments of pleasure, such as the scent of flowers, perfume or fresh bread, no longer occur. Dangers such as the smell of burning or spoiled food cannot be detected. And precious memories associated with different scents fade. The Lost Sense Experience pays special attention to this issue and also gives affected people a bit of hope for recovery.

Leading experts from the Interdisciplinary Center for Smell and Taste at the Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital in Dresden, the Institute of Neuropathology at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the Max Planck Research Center for Neurogenetics in Frankfurt am Main were brought in to ensure the scientific background of the initiative and to provide information on the current state of research on which the olfactory training is based.

Admission to the exhibition is free of charge.
