Hardly any other rap crew shaped the scene in the 90s with as much ease, creativity and unique flow as The Pharcyde.
With their iconic second album "Labcabincalifornia", they set new standards in 1995 and wrote West Coast rap history.
Now they are celebrating the 30th anniversary of this classic and bringing their unmistakable vibes to the Gruenspan in Hamburg.
Founded in Los Angeles, The Pharcyde rose to fame in the early 90s with their debut album "Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde" (1992).
With humorous, introspective lyrics and jazzy beats, they brought a fresh alternative to the dominant gangsta rap sound of the time.
"Passin' Me By" became a classic and is still an integral part of the Golden Era of rap today.
Another masterpiece followed in 1995 with "Labcabincalifornia", which is known for its deep, soulful sound and iconic production by J Dilla.
Tracks such as "Runnin'" and "Drop" showed a musical evolution and are considered milestones of the genre. The legendary video for the album's first single, "Drop", was directed by Spike Jonze and featured footage of the group playing the song backwards, giving it a surreal quality.
The influence of this album can still be felt today and has inspired generations of artists.
