Exhibition of a research-based art project by Xy June Li
03.05.2025, 7pm, vernissage with performance Li Deli's Journey to the West
The small village of Kuling is located in the valley of Mt. Lu in China and was originally founded in 1895 by the English missionary Edward Selby Little as an exclusive resort and sanatorium for Westerners.
The enclave at Kuling is a fascinating case study of how Westerners imagined and constructed a utopian community in the East. Studying it is important to understand how the colonial history of Western powers continues to shape even contemporary society.
Xy Lune Li intervenes the history of Kuling using different media such as installation, performance, text and sound. How can we imagine a utopia that welcomes different cultures and ideologies in a post-colonial context? How is history conveyed in an age of artificial intelligence and how does it influence our perception of reality?
