The Trans Lesbian Response – A Self Portrait

exhibition * Reading * Performance

Noone is born cis - but rather becomes cis. Everybody, in fact, transitions. With this starting point, the works in this show explore cis grooming (the disciplining into cis genders) and its others. The works dip in and out of "trans lesbianism": moments of joyful transfugitivity (defection) beyond the limits of the white cis hetero gaze and its various contracts.

BAIN is a gender liminal writer and performance artist who works on the interstices of desire and violence.

PEARL Friedland is a writer, performer, and time-based media artist who wants liberation now.

BAIN and PEARL will contribute a polyvocal transsexual reading of Monique Wittig's the Lesbian Body (1973) on February 8th, 1900.

CALLAZ is a music-based interdisciplinary butterfly. Her contributions to "The Trans Lesbian Response" address the dressage into cis-heterosexuality through rejection, discipline and dress rehearsals. IN A FUNNY WAY.

primavera_hardegen are a Berlin-based artists. Force of nature and mistress their sarcasm, their contributions to "The Trans Lesbian Response" puts cis grooming on display and stages a site of trans lesbian transgression.

MICHELLE ALEXANDER is an interdisciplinary poet, artist, teacher and practitioner, working from an American-Trinidadian double register. Her poetry unsettles and displaces demarcations, poetically ambiguates between life and death, as well as colonialisms now and then, legible and illegible.

ULAş paints family pictures and writes poetry. He likes destruction more than creativity. His contribution to "The Trans Lesbian Response" is a ghostly family affair - an impossible step beyond unwritten contracts.

ANDREA ILLÉS is a transdisciplinary artist, working with objects, video, sound, and performance, embracing chaos to subvert colonial, racialized, and gendered hegemonies. Her contributions to "The Trans Lesbian Response" mark moments of transfugitivity in sparkling digital print.
