David Lewis Gedge and his semi-legendary band are celebrating a special anniversary this December with 8 live performances in Germany. The Wedding Present was founded in Leeds in 1985. The band emerged from the ashes of a band called The Lost Pandas and was formed by David Gedge [vocals/guitar] and Keith Gregory [bass] when they enlisted the services of Peter Solowka [guitar] and Shaun Charman [drums]. The band's first single - "Go Out And Get 'Em, Boy!" - was released in May 1985 and bears the same title as the first volume of David's autobiography, in which he describes the early days of playing in and around Leeds. Since 1985, The Wedding Present have had eighteen Top 40 hit singles in the UK; not bad for a group who have stubbornly refused to play the record industry game from the start. This pioneering spirit has always been at the heart of the band's philosophy. Since the album George Best ["an unmitigated delight" (NME)], the band has always gone its own, if often eccentric, way. The band are planning several events [including a musical!] to celebrate their fortieth anniversary, including this extensive tour, which kicks off in the UK in October. At these concerts, the band will play pieces from their extensive repertoire.
