Shot in German, the film sheds light on the horrors of the Holocaust from the perspective of Rudolf and Hedwig Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz and his family, who lead an extremely privileged life in their picture-book home wall to wall with the extermination camp.

Rudolf Höß is portrayed by Christian Friedel ("Elser"). Sandra Hüller ("Anatomy of a Case") is once again convincing in the role of Höß' wife Hedwig

Since the end of the Second World War, the downfall of National Socialism, there has been discussion and debate about how the Holocaust can be depicted in art. In his brilliant, experimental film, British director Jonathan Glazer has found a special form that shows none of the horror and yet makes it all palpable.
