Undersang
Harald Beharie
Oslo
Anyone who thinks a forest consists mainly of trees should definitely join this tour group in the Deister. Because it is also mapped terrain, a cultivated resource and a romanticized place of longing. In his latest work Undersang, Harald Beharie, in collaboration with Karoline Bakken Lund, Veronica Bruce and Christian Beharie, dissects the legendary topos and digs deep into its archive of fictions. The performance ritual takes place under rustling trees, on springy moss carpets and between porous stones: Six bodies, on the border between fable and science fiction, join together there to form an organism through the rhythm of their voices. Singing, dancing, drifting and lurking, they imagine the green thicket beyond binary logics, sometimes individually, sometimes collectively. Which stories determine our view of natural spaces? Whose echoes reverberate there? Which voices are overshadowed? Undersang sets fragments in motion in the forest projection screen and shakes up established narratives.
Harald Beharie is a Norwegian-Jamaican performer and choreographer based in Oslo, Norway. In his choreographic practice, which is driven by a desire to dissect established body narratives, Beharie explores alternative forms of togetherness and questions concepts of normativity. Beharie is interested in the unpolished, the self-made and the vulnerability that comes with the unknown. Beharie works in various constellations and contexts with other artists and uses dance as a medium to create elusive spaces of ambivalence and fantasy. In 2023/2024, Harald Beharie won the Norwegian Critics' Prize for Dance for Undersang .
