Tobi Lou

A music magazine once said of the American-Nigerian singer, songwriter, rapper and producer that he sounds "like he's trying to write songs that are emo and cool and breezy at the same time". That was in a review of his 2022 album "Non-Perishable", but it's still relevant today. tobi lou's new single "Gentle Monster" shows quite well how you can imagine that: The beats are upbeat and danceable, but the synths are atmospheric. And tobi lou's switching between rap and vocals goes down like butter, although he sings very tender, almost romantic lines for a rapper.

tobi lou lives in Chicago and released his first single "Pretty Please" a good ten years ago. Before devoting himself to music, he played baseball and basketball professionally for several years. It was primarily his home city that got him hooked on rap and inspired him to record songs while he was still at school. "Chicago just has soul," he explained in an interview a few years ago. "You can just feel it. Whether you like the drill shit or Chief Keef, or whether you're into Chance The Rapper's sermons." tobi lou himself describes his music not with the words "emo", "cool" and "breezy", but as follows: "I always say my songs are happy and extra-sad. For me, it's mainly the sad stuff that makes an artist. Songs that you can relate to and that express what you're going through - the way Frank Ocean and Kid Cudi write them."

tobi lou now has six albums to his name, most notably the aforementioned "Non-Perishable" and "'Decent", as well as his most successful singles "Buff Baby" and "2hrs", which have amassed streams in the hundreds of millions.

tobi lou will finally be coming to Germany on tour this summer and playing a concert at the Privatclub in Berlin. An evening not to be missed if you like dazzling rap artists who don't just make a big deal of themselves, but can also be emotionally moving.
