Total lunar eclipse

During a lunar eclipse, the full moon plunges into the shadow of the earth. The total eclipse, when the moon disappears completely into the Earth's shadow, is particularly exciting. During this phase, it is only illuminated in a pale reddish color by scattered light from the Earth's atmosphere. The special feature of this eclipse, however, is that the moon only rises in Germany shortly before the middle of the eclipse (Cologne region: 20:01), when it is already heavily eclipsed. This is where the observatory in Remscheid's Bismarck Tower can make the most of its undisturbed view of the horizon. However, depending on the atmospheric conditions, the moon may still need some time afterwards to overcome layers of haze near the horizon.

At 20:53, the Moon slowly begins to emerge from the Earth's shadow again, ending the total eclipse. In the following 64 minutes (partial phase), the Moon slowly leaves the Earth's umbra again and its eclipse decreases more and more. From 21:57, the moon has completely left the Earth's umbra, but in certain areas of the moon, part of the sun is still obscured by the Earth, so that some areas appear even darker. This so-called penumbral phase can only be observed in the initial phase, which is why the observation ends at 22:15.

The observation can only take place when the sky is clear.

By the way, you don't need a telescope to observe the Mofi. Even the sight with the naked eye is very impressive. With binoculars you can experience the celestial phenomenon even better. So if the walk to the observatory is too "uncomfortable" for you, look for a spot with an unobstructed view to the east-southeast.
