Mory and Anta dream of a future in Paris. Their home town of Dakar is a place of oppressive traditions and social constraints, full of hostility and exclusion: Mory is called a good-for-nothing and a drifter, Anta has been considered an outsider ever since she went to university. They overcome many obstacles with coolness, tricks and trickery. As the two of them get closer to the supposed land of longing that is France, they begin to doubt their own hopes. Djibril Diop Mambéty's experimental feature film debut in the bright colors of the 70s defies narrative conventions and mixes up a wide variety of genres: it is a road movie, episodic film, initiation story and satire all in one. The boundaries between reality and imagination are fluid, the documentary and the fantastic intermingle.
