Nicolas Collins - trumpet & electronics

Two trumpets, two very different approaches: one electronic, the other acoustic. While Collins works with a computer program and cobbled-together hardware, Ulher uses sheet metal, radios, milk frothers and other everyday objects. The diametrically opposed sound production leads to strangely similar sonic results.

Born and raised in New York, Nicolas Collins spent several years in Europe, where he worked as artistic director of STEIM (Amsterdam) and was a DAAD scholarship holder in Berlin.
He is a professor in the Department of Sound at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is a research fellow at the Orpheus Institute (Ghent) and an early adopter of microcomputers for his live performances, but also uses home-built electronic circuits and conventional acoustic instruments.
His book Handmade Electronic Music - The Art of Hardware Hacking (Routledge), now in its third edition, has influenced the development of electronic music worldwide.

Birgit Ulher, born in Nuremberg, has lived as a freelance musician in Hamburg since the early 1980s. She studied fine arts, which still has an important influence on her music today.
Ulher works primarily on expanding the sound possibilities of the trumpet and has developed her own extended techniques and preparations for producing these sounds.
Her most recent works include videos and sound installations. She performs solo and with her working ensembles, works with dancers, visual artists, composers and in unique collaborations with musicians from all over the world. She has performed at festivals and workshops in Europe, the USA, South America, Russia, the Middle East and Australia and has released numerous CDs.
