Isabelle Pabst

In October 2023, the Cologne-based musician released her debut album "Als die Stille aus der Zeit fiel", in which she sings about the secrets of various figures. The music shines a flashlight on the dark corners of their truths and contradictions and looks resolutely into people's inner conflicts. It feels like Pabst is sitting right on the edge of your bed at 4.00 in the morning. She gently but firmly takes you by the hand and leads you through an amusement park of states. Except that it's underwater and there's a trapdoor in every carousel that pulls you down into the depths. Down there, the bass wobbles and makes you dance with the question marks. Somewhere a piano cries in the dark. Synthesizers, music boxes. Pabst writes "songs like films by David Lynch" (Kulturnews) and points to various genres without quoting them specifically. Casually, more in a hint, and then always in a formal language that lets you listen to the voice. Because the voice is clearly at the center here, a powerful singer stands between lightness and tremendous heaviness and moves confidently through folklore, dry beats and ASMR moments. Hans Nieswandt, who became a kind of supporting voice for Isabelle and on whose FLOWER HANS album she can be heard, says of her music: "Isabelle Pabst has succeeded in creating an impressive and peculiar work - peculiar in a double sense, because it's just her own way, I don't know anyone else who sounds like this; and it's just also peculiar in a beautiful way, how the record moves between song, drone, spoken (or rather whispered) word, beats and whatever else meanders through the stereo spectrum, similar to a river."
