Compassion - hardly any other word sounds as quintessentially Christian as this one, which immediately brings to mind St. Martin's Day and lantern parades. But what does this word and the compassion that precedes it have to do with politics and our society today?

We often hear the thesis that our modern society is moving further and further away from a compassionate society that stands up for one another due to increasing individualism - but how should we assess this? Do we need

do we need more empathy again in tough times like these? Or does the concept of mercy contradict our current social and political community? One example of this conflict is pardons: Are they an instrument to give special legal consideration to exceptional individual cases or are they a contradiction to the general principle of equal treatment?

These are the questions addressed in the first part of the Virtue Trilogy.
