Princess Turandot's revenge is bloody. Anyone who courts her must die unless they solve three riddles. But then an unknown prince wins the deadly game - and now it is up to Turandot to solve his riddle. If she guesses his name by sunrise, he renounces and pays with his life. "Nessun dorma" - no one sleeps - echoes through the night.

Puccini's masterpiece deals with existential and extremely contemporary themes in a fairytale-like setting: Tradition and desire, power and powerlessness. Above all, however, it juxtaposes self-sacrificing and self-determined love. His last work was to become an ordeal not only for his protagonists, but also for Puccini himself. The servant Liù, who was included in the libretto at his request, and her selfless death in love triggered an almost hopeless search for an ending to the story. For what ending does the supposedly ice-cold, man-killing ruler deserve? Puccini died after composing the emotional climax, the servant's suicide.

Puccini's last opera is a suspenseful spectacle with incomparably gripping music. It condenses the dramatic story of love and power. With the deeply moving arias of the slave Liù and many other pieces that have long since become opera hits, the opera has been moving and captivating audiences for almost 100 years.
