Ida is old and disappointed with life, men and herself. To avoid becoming completely impoverished, she occasionally works as a model at senior women's fashion shows. When she loses her apartment, she moves in with Elvira and her mentally handicapped grandson Ole. When a tragic event prompts Ole's mother Manuela to resume the contact they had broken off, their biographies, family secrets and hurts are revealed.
The award-winning author grew up in East Berlin. After training as a typesetter, she worked as an auxiliary nurse on psychiatric wards, lived in Mongolia for a year and left the GDR five years before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
