Program:
Songs by Kandace Springs, Roberta Flack, Stevie Wonder and others (arrangements: Vince Mendoza)
Not every singer can claim that Prince, who died in 2016, was their mentor. Kandace Springs can! In 2014, the grand master discovered her cover version of Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" online and raved: "Kandace has a voice that could melt snow." The head of the label "Blue Note" was no less enthusiastic, signing the young singer a short time later and producing her debut album "Soul Eyes" (2016). On this and the following albums, Kandace Springs' assets come into their own, as the remarkable alto voice of the artist, who was born in Nashville in 1989, sounds smoky and wicked at times and gentle and ingratiating at others. Although she describes Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Roberta Flack and Norah Jones as her role models, she is so artistically independent that she gives their songs new, very personal interpretations. Kandace Springs has known the WDR Big Band, a permanent fixture in the music industry for decades, and its 1st guest conductor and composer in residence, Vince Mendoza, from their joint performances in the pre-corona era. How wonderful that we are now seeing a new edition of this collaboration!
