38th Greek Film Week

The event offers insights into the subtitling process of the film "The Murderess" and the challenges involved. This lecture was developed in cooperation with the LMU Munich (Prof. Dr. Lilia Diamantopoulou, Neo-Greek Studies) and the JGU Mainz (PD Dr. Christos Karvounis, Department of Translation, Linguistics and Cultural Studies).

First, the film will be analyzed in the historical and social context of Alexandros Papadiamantis' novella "The Murderess" (1903), then the adaptation by screenwriter Eva Nathena will be discussed, which transfers the patriarchal structures, oppression and mistreatment of women in Greece at that time to the present day. Specific features of subtitling work will then be discussed using concrete examples. These include aspects such as "time", "space", "editing" as well as the change from spoken to written language and specific translation problems, such as linguistic and cultural peculiarities and translation strategies.
