Untiefen des Raums. Simon Schubert im Feld-Haus
In the organizer's words:
With his expansive and multi-layered paper installation "Untiefen des Raums", Cologne-based artist Simon Schubert responds directly to the Feld-Haus building, an architectural sculpture by Danish artist Per Kirkeby (1939-2018).
Schubert transforms the exhibition space into a white cube made of folded white paper. The filigree bas-reliefs of his large-format folds oscillate between graphics and sculpture, between two- and three-dimensionality, in an interplay of light and shadow. Illusionary architectural spaces emerge from the paper, which here is both the image carrier and the design material. Disappearance, absence or the inner perception of memory are recurring themes in the artist's oeuvre. At the center of the installation is a monumental, walk-in paper sculpture coated with graphite powder.
