The Sound of Her - A tribute to the pioneers of jazz
"The Sound of Her" is dedicated to the often overlooked female composers in jazz history. The quartet with Scottish bassist Roz Macdonald, singer Tanja Filipovic, drummer Chris Parker and pianist Valentin Schuppich presents a unique tribute to the women who have shaped jazz.
While for many this topic only begins with the avant-garde and female artists such as Carla Bley, "The Sound of Her" deliberately puts the spotlight on many of the hidden female jazz musicians and composers of times long past. For example, icons of the "Great American Songbook" such as Irene Kitchings - the African-American pianist and composer who usually stood in the shadow of her famous husband Teddy Wilson - or Ann Ronnell and Bernice Petkere are honored. Bebop pioneer Melba Liston, who long took a back seat to great bandleaders such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus and Count Basie, is also prominently featured on this evening.
The focus of the program will be on the shaded side of jazz history, the musical heritage of women that connects people across generations through a universal jazz language.
This evening invites the audience to discover the hitherto often hidden sounds of female jazz composers - The Sound of Her!
