Valentina Karga – Well Beings

In the organizer's words:

The solo exhibition Well Beings by Valentina Karga deals with the feelings, worries and fears associated with the climate crisis. So-called climate anxiety - a chronic fear of ecological collapse - occurs more frequently in times of climate crisis. It can lead to nervousness, sleep disorders, panic attacks and depression. A huge range of "anti-stress" products now promise relief: weighted blankets, body pillows or hug pillows are supposed to alleviate stress disorders and calm anxiety about the future. In her exhibition Well Beings, artist and designer Valentina Karga takes the resulting market ad absurdum with her "self-care" products. She arranges her Well Beings (in the sense of comforting beings) as a spatial installation of textile sculptures and drawings inspired by the shape and form of small prehistoric idols. Idols are ancient figures of abstract creatures, usually hybrids of humans and animals. These idols not only represent an important cultural heritage, they also symbolize the primeval connection between humans, animals and nature. Using natural and recycled materials, Valentina Karga creates figures, forms and seating landscapes as textile sculptures that are modeled on the ancient idols and can be touched and embraced by visitors.

Contrary to what we might initially expect, the exhibition only confronts us with dramatic images of climate catastrophes in passing. It is not loud or stressful. Well Beings is a warm place that approaches the topic with care and places people, the community, at the center.

Valentina Karga (*1986 in Chalkidiki, Greece) moves between the disciplines of art, design, architecture and research. Her work combines elements of socio-political practice with experiments that question existing social and physical frameworks in the fields of energy, economy and sustainability.

The exhibition Well Beings was previously on show at the Hamburg Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe and the Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken.
