To mark the 50th anniversary of Francisco Franco's death, the MEK is showing eight artistic positions that deal with the role of mass tourism in Spain during the dictatorship.
The number of democratically governed countries is falling, while autocracies are on the rise. In this situation, the MEK deals with the phenomenon of vacation trips to dictatorially governed countries, in particular Spain under Francisco Franco, who was in power from 1939 until his death in 1975. In the late 1950s, Franco opened up the country to mass tourism in order to obtain urgently needed foreign currency. Holidaymakers enjoyed the sun, beaches and low prices, while mostly unwittingly distracting themselves from the political oppression.
The exhibition "Vamos a la playa. Vacations under Franco" sheds light on this topic through works by eight artists who reflect on the situation at the time and their own memories. For the first time, it combines the two parts of the previous exhibition "Vacances amb Franco" in one place.
The exhibition will be accompanied by public talks and events, including a panel discussion on democratic opposition to the Franco regime, a lecture on coming to terms with the dictatorship and a city walk.
The exhibition is supported by the Embassy of Spain, the Ibero-American Institute PK, the Association of Friends of the Museum of European Cultures and the Ramon Llull Institute. A special exhibition of the Bòlit, Center d'Art Contemporani and the Museu de l'Empordà (Figueres).
