Vernissage: Die drei Lügen der Skulptur

In the organizer's words:

After Elke Hopfe and Andrea Zaumseil, Elisabeth Wagner is the third professor to exhibit together with former students in the "Professors and Alumnae" series at INSELGALERIE Berlin. Elisabeth Wagner has been teaching sculpture, installation and spatial concept at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel since 1996 and in the sculpture section since 2006.

With Lilian Nachtigall and Regine Schulz, she presents two young artists who have already attracted attention for their talents.

All three work in dialog with the space and in relation to each other. What they have in common is their approach to the material, the investigation and observation of the space, the sculptural conditions from which the work develops.

Elisabeth Wagner says about her working method: 'The common thread in my work is allowing ambivalences and illusions, balancing the material, the resulting tension between lightness and heaviness. My work results from this relationship of polarity.

Still classically trained by Wilhelm Loth, she sometimes turns her back on her minimalist explorations of space and works figuratively again, but then with a wink of irony.

Lilian Nachtigall loves to play with materiality and illusion. Her videos feature spatial models that give the impression of large industrial and prefabricated buildings. Only the details reveal that something is wrong.

Regine Schulz alienates materials such as cement and steel from their original appearance. She removes them from their topography and places them in a different context, challenging the viewer to relate to them physically.

Using a spatial model of the INSELGALERIE Berlin, Nachtigall, Schulz and Wagner have developed ideas that will certainly change during the construction phase of their joint exhibition and possibly take a different direction. Both the materials and the sensory experience of the space will guide the artists. The result will be surprising. The curators Eva Hübner and Gabi Ivan will only intervene minimally in the working process.
