AUT/SVN 2022, documentary film, 99 min
Director: Andrina Mračnikar
Language: OmU (German, Slovenian with German subtitles)
In southern Carinthia, Austria, around 90 percent of all inhabitants spoke Slovenian before 1910. Today the percentage is in single figures. Director Andrina Mračnikar, herself bilingual, formulates a highly political urgency in her essayistic documentary in a personal way: What happens when your mother tongue is taken away from you in everyday life? What role does language play in a minority's concept for the future? "A film as a plea against resignation and for courageous political action." (Diagonale 2022)
After the film, we will talk to the historian, freelance media maker and author Ralf Grabuschnig, who himself comes from Carinthia, about the borders, minorities and languages that are disappearing. Ralf will be reading from his current book "Unterwegs zwischen Grenzen. Minorities in the headlock of nations".
In his podcast Deja-vu Geschichte and the weekly email newsletter Geschichtshappen, Ralf regularly takes a look at history to see the world of today with new eyes.
