In the organizer's words:

Lecture by Peter Konarzewski and Dr. Sophie-Charlotte Opitz - 2x Photography: Between Preserving and Exhibiting

How do we preserve historical photographs for future generations? How does digitization influence the archiving of photographs? What role does their staging in exhibitions play? And what are the challenges of contextualizing historical photographs in today's world? These and other questions are the focus of the lecture "2x Photography: Between Preserving and Exhibiting".

The lecture combines two perspectives: Peter Konarzewski, photo restorer at the Museum Folkwang, sheds light on the challenges of preserving and digitizing historical photographs. Dr. Sophie-Charlotte Opitz, curator at the Bucerius Kunst Forum, will provide insights into innovative exhibition concepts and the significance of photography for collective memory and reflection on the economy, society and history. The evening will be introduced by Prof. Dr. Ralf Stremmel, Director of the Krupp Historical Archive.

Photography has been an important focus of the Krupp Foundation since its establishment: not only does the Krupp Historical Archive, which is owned by the Foundation, preserve 2.5 million photographs on industrial history, the Foundation also supports photo exhibitions and publications, accompanies the Essen Center for Photography and promotes young artists and curators with scholarship programs. Dr. Sophie-Charlotte Opitz, for example, was a scholarship holder of the "Museum Curators for Photography" program.
