Dance theater
Duration: 45 minutes
The play is based on the eponymous story "VIY", a hair-raising gothic horror novella written in 1835 by the Ukrainian writer Nikolay Gogol. The novella begins in Ukraine, near Kiev, where a group of seminary students from the city wander the countryside drunk during their summer vacation.
They get lost and spend a night in the company of a gaunt witch. A brawl breaks out and one of the students, Khoma, murders the supposed witch. However, it turns out that he actually killed the daughter of a beautiful landowner, and now he has to sit with her corpse in a church for three days and protect her from evil spirits.
The project was created in 2023 as part of the ZNU's educational theater as a diploma thesis by 4th year students of the "Stage Arts" course. Our drama students are on a quest for innovation, which is reflected in their performances. They independently chose the play for the production, selected and chose the music for the performance and actively collaborated with the choreographer during the production.
