Vocal Distortion Sounds

In the organizer's words:

Workshop in English language

From science to stage - discovering the art and science behind distorted voices

Aretha Franklin, Chester Bennington, Bruno Mars, Bruce Dickinson, Louis Armstrong, Axl Rose, Beyoncé and Lizzy Hale have one thing in common: they all use distortion sounds. In the artistic use of voice, vocal distortion is not just a by-product of intense emotion, it is a conscious decision that adds texture and depth to performances in different musical genres and spoken word. From the raw sounds of rock and metal to the emotional depth of blues, gospel and even classical music, vocal distortion offers a wide range of expressive possibilities. However, to produce these unique sounds without damaging the voice, singers need to master complex physiological techniques.

This workshop delves into the world of Intentional Vocal Distortions (IVD) - a fascinating aspect of vocal expression that goes far beyond the stereotypical association with heavy metal. IVDs are used in modern/contemporary commercial music (CCM), traditional music, experimental vocals and even in acting, dubbing and video game scoring.

This workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore both the scientific and practical aspects of these fascinating sounds, with a focus on the application of different types of distortion.

Discovering the biomechanics of distortion sounds

Participants will embark on a journey of discovery through the dimensions of IVDs. The workshop offers hands-on experience with different vocal techniques and through guided exercises and real-time visual feedback technologies, participants will gain insight into the interplay of these elements that create the characteristic roughness of vocal distortions.

In addition to technique, the workshop will emphasize vocal health and how to achieve powerful distorted sounds without strain. In addition, strategies for maintaining vocal health will be taught so that singers can preserve their individual vocal identity while opening up new artistic possibilities.

Get to know Mauro Fiuza

The workshop will be led by Mauro Fiuza, a Brazilian voice researcher and vocal coach with a great passion for IVDs. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Vocal Pedagogy at the Voice, Music, and Language Laboratory of UNED in Madrid. He has studied with some of the world's most renowned voice scientists, including Filipa Lã in Spain and Johan Sundberg and Sten Ternström at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. His path has taken him from crossover singer in classical and heavy metal music to voice researcher - complemented by a master's degree in speech therapy, where he studied the physiology and acoustics of distorted voices.
