Statement on the cancellation/postponement of the event on 29.3.24:
The event "Völkerball" in the Batschkapp on Good Friday unfortunately has to be postponed due to lack of permission from the public order office.
Reason: The Hessian public holiday law. In our opinion, the interpretation of the public order office is unlawful.
According to the public order office's own statement (which admittedly dates back 40 years), events that serve the overriding interest of art and culture are not subject to approval on these public holidays!
At that time, the public order office banned an event with the artist Marc Almond in the Volksbildungsheim, which still existed at the time.
At the same time, a major event with the group "Dire Straits" was taking place in the festival hall on the same day. After some back and forth, the public order office then announced: (quote):
"...that no special permit was required for the event on 20.11.1985 in the Festhalle, as this event served an overriding interest in the arts."
This made things clear for us. Concerts can also take place on public holidays.
Why people now disagree 40 years later is beyond us. Apart from that, it is certainly not the responsibility of the public order office to decide what is art or culture and what is not.
As a reasonable, i.e. judicial, clarification of the issue is hopeless due to the time constraints, the band has decided to postpone the event.
We will continue to pursue the matter in any case and are aiming for a fundamental legal clarification for Good Friday 2025.
The Senate in Hamburg has now relaxed the strict quiet regulations somewhat - music may be played in music clubs between 2 am and 5 am. In contrast, the city of Frankfurt is still proving to be particularly backwoods.
