Program:
Heinrich Ignaz Biber: Requiem in F minor C 8 and works by Johann Heinrich Schmelzer
"Access to light through the voice" - that is the motto of Lionel Meunier and Vox Luminis. The Belgian ensemble fulfills this claim like a dream with a soft, smooth and homogeneous sound of crystal-clear voices with optimum transparency. Together with the Freiburger BarockConsort, which consists of members of the Freiburger Barockorchester, it joins forces to focus on two grand masters of Austrian Baroque music: Johann Heinrich Schmelzer and his presumed pupil Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber. The latter's Requiem in F minor, the main work of the evening, is characterized by a particularly varied score that deals profoundly with the themes of faith, transience and farewell. The Bohemian-born composer, who was Kapellmeister in the service of the Archbishop of Salzburg from 1670, was also a famous violin virtuoso. This is reflected in the Requiem in that the first violin stands out from the other string instruments and acts as an expressive upper voice above the choir - perhaps as a symbol of hope for an eternal light after death?
