In May 2025, the THFxGESCHICHTE event series at Tempelhof Airport will focus on the 80th anniversary of the end of the war.

In a joint event organized by Tempelhof Projekt GmbH and the Airlift Foundation on 12 May, historian and author Manfred Görtemaker will be discussing the history of Berlin from 1943/44 to the beginning of the 1950s under the title "Berlin between war and peace - downfall and survival in the conflict between East and West" . The main focus is on internal developments and the foreign policy framework.

For the German capital and its inhabitants, the end of the Second World War and the beginning of the post-war period were associated with extensive material destruction, immeasurable human suffering and prolonged military occupation by the victorious powers. The advance of the Soviet Union into Central Europe and the political and ideological division of the continent during the Cold War placed Berlin at the center of the tension between East and West. The blockade of the city by the communist rulers in 1948/49 became a test in which the survival of the city was once again at stake. The lecture examines the history of Berlin from 1943/44 to the beginning of the 1950s. The aim is to highlight both the internal development and the foreign policy framework.

About Manfred Görtemaker:

Manfred Görtemaker, born on April 28, 1951 in Großoldendorf (East Frisia), is a renowned German historian and Professor Emeritus of Modern History at the University of Potsdam. His research focuses on the German and European history of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Görtemaker has also been a visiting professor at international universities such as Harvard, Stanford and Oxford. He lives with his wife, the historian Heike B. Görtemaker, near Berlin.
