Fraternities in Germany are based on a nationalistic and anti-modern ideology, which is expressed, for example, in the motto of the largest umbrella organization "Honor - Freedom - Fatherland". Honor is for those who are particularly tough on themselves and others in order to find recognition in the men's association; freedom means freedom from what they hate as "left-wing politics" or the insecurities of modernity. The fraternity member has an attitude towards the world that, in the words of philosopher Theodor W. Adorno, goes hand in hand with an intellectual provincialism. This refers to a lack of reflection on one's own experiences, which can lead to a defensive projection: They imagine feminists, LGBTs or even "the Jews" as an obstacle to the freedom they misunderstand. The lecture analyzes the subject constitution of fraternity members and looks at their ideological components, which find their expression in anti-feminism and anti-Semitism.

Debora Eller is a sociologist, consultant for emancipation at the fzs and chairwoman of the Society for Critical Education. She publishes on the topics of critique of anti-Semitism, feminism and critical theory
