The starting point of the discussion is the modern sacred building in the changing constellations of our contemporary society. More than almost any other type of building, modernist churches represent the change in the concept of architecture in the 20th century with regard to building, construction and the concept of space. They also demonstrate the transformation of the institution of the church into a democratic and community-oriented religious community. Today, however, their existence is highly endangered for both reasons, because despite their listed status, it seems extremely complex and costly to upgrade them in line with the latest building standards. At the same time, they are hardly ever used for their original purpose as places of worship. Nevertheless, churches, which are often found in peripheral urban locations, have great potential as socially valuable places. Under what conditions can these spaces open up, prove their worth and be preserved today?
