In the 1960s, German politicians presented themselves as representatives of a morally renewed Germany on "private pilgrimages" to Israel. After the establishment of diplomatic relations (1965), the now official trips proved the German claim to "normalization"; the Israeli government, on the other hand, insisted in the talks on the special moral responsibility of the Germans. Behind the scenes, both sides saw their rapprochement as a pragmatic project from the outset.

In her publication "Inszenierte Versöhnung" (Staged Reconciliation),Dr. Jenny Hestermann comprehensively analyses how the rapprochement after the civilizational rupture of the Nazi dictatorship was clothed in the rhetoric of morality and reconciliation.
