Vortrag: "Theorie und Praxis der Wahr- und Weissagung im chinesischen Sprachraum"

On the occasion of the 200th "Jour Fixe", the Confucius Institute Munich is organizing a lecture series on "Religions and Cults in China's Coastal Zones" initiated by our scientific advisor Prof. i.R. Dr. Ptak.

On 13.12.2024 Prof. Dr. Lackner will give a lecture on the topic "Theory and Practice of Divination and Prophecy in the Chinese Language Area" at 7:30 pm at the Confucius Institute Munich.

The earliest written documents of Chinese civilization are the so-called "oracle bones", on which questions and wishes of the ruling dynasty were recorded. From around the 13th century BC to the present day, divination has played a continuously important role in China. Over the course of time, a wide variety of methods have been developed to interpret the future.

Using objects from an exhibition at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg in 2021, the lecture will present various techniques and point out European parallels. In addition, the complex attitude of the Chinese elite towards these practices will be highlighted, exemplified by the statements of the important scholar Ji Yun 紀昀 (1724-1805).

Prof. Dr. Michael Lackner is Senior Professor of Sinology and speaker of the research group "Alternative Rationalities and Esoteric Practices in Global Perspective" at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.
